Match Report
Hazelwood School 1st Team vs  The New Beacon
On: Saturday, 29 Sep 2018
Venue: Away

Hazelwood lost their opening fixture 1-0 to Dulwich prep despite playing exceptionally well and creating a number of very good opportunities. The team stuck to the game plan and did not let their heads drop and richly deserved to win their second game 1-0 against Saint Ronan's. The third game was a very tight encounter against a strong Yardley Court side, but despite being under pressure for a large amount of the game the team remained compact and competitive and a wonderful goal from Jack Jordan won the game for Hazelwood. Tiring a little in the fourth fixture, Hazelwood scored late to gain a 1-1 draw with Solefield. The result put Hazelwood second in the group narrowly missing out on first place after losing to Dulwich, even though our points and goal difference were exactly the same.

In the quarter final, the boys edged another close contest 1-0 against a characteristically strong Marlborough House. The semi final pitched Hazelwood against the hosts and current champions New Beacon. Despite creating a number of good opportunities the boys were unable to break down a very physically strong opposition and the game was decided by a penalty shoot out. After winning a recent tournament on penalties we were confident that we would do so again. Unfortunately this was not to be our day, some great saves by their keeper meant New Beacon edged past us 4-3 on penalties.

Although bitterly disappointed by their semi final exit, the Hazelwood boys should be very proud of their achievement. They played entertaining and attacking football from start to finish and probably deserved more than their semi final exit would suggest.
